ABOUT US

Forged in London the Nrb Bus was brought up in the era of the Sex Pistols, The Clash and Joy Division.

The Punk-ethos and the do-it-yourself culture that came as a result of that era, has been something we have always looked at and been inspired. In Kenya, we know it as Afro-Punk, something we are also proud to be a part of. The Nrb Bus has been a creative space for visual artists and musicians since it’s official opening in 2012.

The Nrb Bus is the creature, spiritual home and mobile office of Cultural Video Production a film production company with more than 15 years of experience in East Africa, Europe and South America.

Vincenzo Cavallo
Director & Producer

Vincenzo is a media activist and a professional consultant for NGOs and International Organizations. He is also a Ph.D in Communication and New Technologies and a Videomaker. Vincenzo worked for RAI in Italy and the United Nation in Kenya. He works full time for The Nrb Bus and Cultural Video.

Gaffer - Camera Operator - Grips

Karanja is Gaffer, Camera operator, Grips and a professional 1st AC with a diploma in film and tv production. He has worked in many projects both locally and internationally.

Filmmaker

Monicah is a post producer and a director.

Actor - Director

Mahad is a Somali Kenyan actor/director, casting director and co-founder of the collective Somali React. Director of the documentary “Almost Somali”, a co-production with STEPS, DW and ARTE, Co-director of the feature film "Bufis - Daydreamers".

Almost Somali

Mahad was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, known for its Little Mogadishu, in the Eastleigh district. This colorful district is actually the second largest Somali city in the world. Mahad and his friends are called “Somali Sijui”, literally “the Somalis who don't know”. They are Somalis who are as much Kenyan as they are Somali, in search of their roots and identity in the cultural melting pot of Nairobi. Wazi?FM

A feature film to create awareness on urban refugees’ lives and fight the stereotypes. The first movie made in Kenya, which tackles terrorism and corruption after the Westgate siege. MoMo is a Somali urban refugee living in Eastleigh Nairobi where he runs the community radio station Wazi? FM with his Kenyan friend Kevo. Their partnership began when an NGO brought them together as part of a program to have a Somali and a Kenyan work on media project promoting peace. Everything is going well at Wazi? FM until one day the team stumble upon a dark secret in their community and MoMo vanishes. Pulling together the pieces of the story an Inspector from the Kenyan Special Forces is trying to understand what really happened before MoMo’s disappearance. Is this a case of terrorism or corruption? Were MoMo and Kevo really friends or enemies? Was MoMo in love with Kevo’s sister or was he just using her? How are the Kenyan police implicated in the case? And most importantly how is this whole story related to the Westgate Mall tragedy? ZIFF 2015 – Golden Dhow Award – Best Feature Film. A documentary about urban spaces and our relationship to them as told through the eyes of a group of African hip-hop artists. The social issue, which underpins the documentary, is the importance of public space and public art in contemporary society, and how and why western metropolises are affected by the emerging phenomenon of "gentrification". Connection House

The first Afro Italian Comedy Web Series that talks about immigration with the language of slapstick and surrealism. What would you do if suddenly as a rich bourgeois from the city center you found yourself in a run-down periphery, with no money and begging for hospitality in your own house? Moreover, your hosts in your house are African illegal migrants who have converted your house into a sort of brothel. Well, maybe you will become one of them. Pasos de Cumbia

A documentary series of 11 chapters about the journey of the Chilean musician Cuti Aste traveling trough Africa ( Nigeria and Cameroon ) seeking the origins of cumbia that slaves brought to Latin America, specifically Colombia. For this reason, Cuti Aste continues his investigation in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Argentina and Chile inquiring about the steps taken by the cumbia from Colombia, and seeking the most renowned exponents and their different styles. Always with the idea of making a compilation and unreleased album called "Cumbia Steps" which he will record with his portable recording studio. Do you see what I see?

A collaboration between Cultural Video and the photographer Brendan Bannon, a video, audio-narrated slideshow about a photography workshop by Brendon Bannon in Namibia and Ethiopia refugee camps. This project gave refugee children a chance to explore and explain their life through photography. 2008

Qashinka

A short participatory video shot in the refugee camp of Hagadera- Dadaab, Kenya. The process involved a group of Somali refugees in producing an educational video with the goal of spreading good practices on waste management.

THE NRB BUS AND CANON PARTNERSHIP

The Nrb Bus has a partnership with Canon North and Central Africa to support the creation of skilled jobs in the digital media industries in Kenya and wider East Africa by providing a series of free participatory trainings to young professional photographers and videographers.

So far The Nrb Bus has organized workshops in story telling, urban photography, urban landscape, low light photography, fashion photography, food photography, vlogging, script writing and cinematography, and media live streaming.

The project includes also a Roadshow Tour in five major cities of Kenya where The Nrb Bus has reached the audio-visual community. Stay tuned for next workshops.
